Warm Spice for Sweet & Savory
Nutmeg, also known as myristica fragrans, is the seed of the nutmeg tree, a tropical, dark-leaved evergreen tree. Nutmeg trees are native to the Spice Islands of Indonesia and produce not only nutmeg, but mace as well. Nutmeg is the seed itself while mace is the grated outer covering.
Nutmeg has a distinctive pungent fragrance and a warm slightly sweet taste; it is used to flavor a variety of dishes, from baked goods, desserts, potatoes, meats, sauces, vegetables, and such beverages as eggnog, hot chocolate and coffee.
Looking for a way to grate your nutmeg? Our favorite tool is the Microplane Nutmeg Grinder. A must have!
